Old JEDI Statement:

Justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential to the vitality of our research group. Our mission is to be the best in the world at what we do as chemists and scholars: to learn, teach, connect, and create at the highest level possible. We cannot do that without cultivating a myriad of perspectives and experiences and promoting a culture of acceptance and respect. A more diverse group of individuals can generate a broader range of ideas, lead to more innovative solutions to problems, and are more successful when adapting to multi-faceted, complex challenges. Diversity is essential to creating a successful lab; however, we are committed to diversity not because it is efficient but because it is the right thing to do.

Our living pledge is our ongoing commitment to JEDI in our lab and community. As we learn and progress together, we will continue to improve our pledge:

  • We will actively recruit and contact women and underrepresented students from small colleges and non-research institutions in the world in addition to large research institutions in the USA.
  • We will provide research opportunities, career advice, and application training sessions to underrepresented students at the high school, college, and graduate school level.
  • Prior to entering the lab all individuals must have experience teaching, mentoring, or serving individuals in need such as first-generation students, low-income students, international and/or immigrant families.
  • In the first month of researching students must complete a mandatory diversity, equity, and inclusion course (hosted by Starbucks Global Academy & ASU).
  • Each semester, students must commit to a minimum of 2 activities that promote JEDI and post a link to the group website of their endeavors.
  • In the lab, we will prioritize the health and professionalism of our students in order to sustain research passion and a group philosophy of acceptance and collaboration.
  • We will remind each other regularly to listen as well as speak, to work as a team, and to recognize, cite, and sponsor the works of scientists who come from non-traditional backgrounds.
  • We will replace a segment of one research meeting per month with a think tank activity where we present and discuss articles that highlight global problems & solutions relating to JEDI that can help us better ourselves as people and as research scientists.
